TCA wins Tournament of ChampionsBy GEORGE O’GORMAN gogorman@trentonian.com EAST RUTHERFORD — In what became a storybook ending, Briyona
Canty closed out what will certainly be remembered as a legendary career in Mercer County girls basketball with perfect poise
and precision on the foul line in the final minute last night at the Izod Center. Just after her Trenton Catholic
Academy Lady Mikes had seen what once was a 14-point second-half lead cut to one with 3:27 to play, Canty did what All-Americans
are supposed to do. She sank seven of eight foul shots in the final 50 seconds, including the last six in a row, to lock
up a 54-49 win for TCA over Neptune last night and secure the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title. The Lady Mikes
got 17 points from Canty on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 7-for-10 at the line. They also got seven rebounds and 16
points from senior Queen Tiye Jackson, who shot 6-for-10, and were the recipients of 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting from Game
MVP Robin Perkins. They all helped TCA become only the second team in Mercer County history to win the TofC, joining the Trenton
girls who did it in 2002 — also in their first trip to TofC final.
